Miss America 2.0 No Swimsuit Thoughts
As an occasional model and super pageant fan, I love the swimsuit and evening gown portion of the competition. Even if that means I’m working out, craving junk food, and spending money on over-the-top attire, I love the process and working the runway on stage. That’s why I started Model4Miracles with my mom. There’s no better feeling than having your moment on stage, and feeling like a million bucks.
I remember competing in Miss Florida’s Outstanding Teen and how excited I was to move up to the swimsuit portion one day. I am not athletic or coordinated, so my fitness wear routines would be awful.
So now that Miss America has taken out the swimsuit and evening gown portion of the competition, I’m a little bummed because I can’t play up my stronger suits. I’m still trying to figure out my talent, and my lack thereof won’t be compensated by the pageant phases of competition.
BUT this is great. For every girl and woman to have the chance to compete for scholarships and further their education. I believe every person should compete in a pageant to gain confidence and develop interpersonal skills. And for someone outside of the pageant world, they may feel limited by having to wear a swimsuit or buying an evening gown for the event. So this plan is great to welcome more women into the pageant.
The new Miss America, if executed correctly, should focus more on the impact it will make in scholarships, service, and talent and less on the elimination of the “pageant” aspects of the competition. The biggest downfall will be for the swimsuit and gown sponsors and loyal pageant fans that have supported the pageant since day 1.
Plus, maybe contestants can wear swimsuits in the new version of evening wear. Then it will be freedom of expression, based on every contestant. I just hope they keep the crown and sash, I love sparkles and the way little girls get excited to see a princess.
So basically, I’m glad more girls will feel comfortable competing and it’s changing the game in pageantry. But, I’m still petty because I’d need to work on a stronger talent if I planned to compete.
